Service Set For North Side Husband, Wife
A Joint funeral mass for a Far North Side husband and wife killed by shotgun blasts Tuesday will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Matthias Catholic Church, 4089 Karl Rd.
Columbus police said John A. YOKOIS, 46, shot his wife, Zelda, 45, and then killed himself at their home at 2508 Youngs Dr.
YOKOIS ADMITTED that he killed his wife in a telephone conversation with his brother-in-law shortley before 3 a.m., police said. The relative called police, but YOKOIS was dead when they arrived, police said.
Police quoted relatives Tuesday as saying that Mrs. YOKOIS, a food service manager for Stouffer's restaurants, had been despondent over the loss of her job when the Top of the Center closed about a montha ago at 100 E. Broad St.
But William Maxwell, regional manager for Stouffer's, said later that Mrs. YOKOIS had never been taken off the Stouffer's payroll.
MAXWELL said he spoke to Mrs. Yokois about 1:30 p.m. Monday and that she had accepted a June 1 opening at Stouffer's University Inn, 3025 Olentangy River Rd., where her husband had been employed for 15 years as a maintenance engineer.
The couple had returned from a two-week Florida vacation only days before the shooting, Maxwell said.
Police said YOKOIS may have been despondent over an arthritic condition.
Mrs. YOKOIS called the University Inn early Monday and said her husband would not report to work because he was suffering chest pains. Employees said she told them YOKOIS had been in the hospital overnight and had been given a prescription for medicine that caused drowsiness.
Calling hours for the couple will be 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Egan-Ryan Funeral Home, 403 E. Broad St.
