Shirley:
Uh, oh...I sure hope that I haven't "leaped" too far here, grasping at straws in our anxiousness after "searching fatigue". Elsewhere, I would put this PK Hornbeck m. MA Miller in an adjunct WorldConnect file "fls-maybe", but on my dad's mom's dad, I think I'll put this in our main "fl-sibel-a" file so as to make someone mad or glad enough to EMail.
The promptness of your reply is appreciated, as I race to update our WorldConnect file again. The info that Hornback is quite distinct from Hornbaker, altho discouraging, is just as welcome as confirmation. I had been planning a library mission on Sunday to see all the census names on the Van Cleave and Hornbaker farms mentioned in the letters.
Whoops!...it looks like I mixed up dad WH and son WE Cook in first EMail! I should have said William H. Cook m. Millie Miller > only known kid: William E. "W.E." Cook (11 Oct 1842; IN or KY). See:
<http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=fl-sibel-a>
...You would have to read the considerable notes there, especially on W.E. Cook, one of which, regarding his mom Millie Miller, is sadly amusing. The Hornbaker lead is:

EMail from living Van Cleave 18:36 02 Apr 2003:
[transcription from "Blakesburg Excelsior", on or after 11 Feb 1926]
Who Knows
The postmistress has received the following letter from a former pioneer of Urbana township. It reads as follows: "I am after names of the people that live on the old Jim VanCleave farm, four miles west of Blakesburg and also the old Hornbaker farm, 3 1/2 miles southwest of Blakesburg. I lived between these two farms from 1852 to 1866. I served in the Civil War and married a girl by the name of Ann Hopp raised by Hiram VanCleave, Jim VanCleave's father. I lived on the Hornbaker farm in 1865 and am now 82 years old.
W. E. Cook, Ft. Dodge, Kansas
-----------------------------------------------
This Urbana Twp is variously (arguably?) in Monroe CO or Wapello Co, IA. However, we have seen a couple of sources with KY and / or IN locales for W.H. Cook m. Millie Miller and their son W.E. Cook. It also seems that W.E. Cook, moved around once in awhile. Hopefully, I will find some on this Urbana Twp. farm with KY locales, or who show up there before or after. In any case, the time periods of the various marriages and kids mesh well. Yes, I am suggesting that Millie Miller (IN or VA) m. 1st W.H. (NOT W.E.) Cook (IN or KY), had son W.E. Cook (1842; IN or KY), then m. 2nd (1847 / 1849 per you) P.K. Hornbeck.
However, your seeing Mildred G. (as sp. of PK?) in 1860 Grayson Co, KY census is a bit discouraging, considering WE Cook's 1861 letter about his mom. Brian VanCleave suggests that they were in Urbana Twp, IA at this time, altho the "cornfield" might have been elsewhere. I see a W.E. Cook and prob kinsman Ruben R. Cook in Pleasant Grove Twp, Mahaska Co, IA 1860 census in the Johnson Miller (1829 / 1830; KY) res, a poss kinsman of Millie Miller; Millie may have been elsewhere. Hopefully, you have seen Hornbaker equated with Hornback / Hornbeck, however mistakenly, on occasion?
Your sets of kids are very close to LDS AF# 17TK-GQD, except that you show Margaret (06 Dec 1850; KY), mom ME Gallaher / Galliher. There may be a problem with her and / or Margaret J. (26 Jul 1854; KY), mom M.A. Miller: it seems unlikely that P.K. Hornbeck would name two daus "Margaret"...2nd sp. M.A. Miller had at least one, maybe two kids before 1851. Ignoring those without exact b. dates, it looks to me like Margaret (06 Dec 1850) was conceived about Mar 1850; Charles (28 Sep 1849) was conceived about Nov 1848. Of course, PK Hornbeck could have had two wives for a time; there is one WorldConnect file (":2712084") showing LDS ordinances on MA Miller (LDS connection or status of polygamy unknown to this Episcopalian). Otherwise, Charles may be of Mary rather than Millie. It would be easy to merge the two Margaret daus...if only one had an exact b. date...but they both do (???).
Hopefully, you are as open-minded about refutation as I am? Your "homepages/rootsweb.com/~hornbeck..." doesn't show Jacob Miller as dad of Millie, altho of the three "Mil* Miller sp. Hornb*" WorldConnect files, one ("dkrych") shows Jacob. There is a much-too-young Mildred A. Miller, age 5 @ 1850 census with dad Jacob returned by LDS "exact spelling". I am concerned that an error of dad Jacob, starting with this, may have become propagated from one person to another...especially when you see Mildred G. in 1860 census? We would expect that M.A. Miller would be M.A. Hornbeck, sp. of P.K. Hornbeck, in 1850 (do you have this?), but might be found as M.A. Cook, sp. of W.H. Cook, altho I think that my top cuz Nancy has already drawn a blank on that. W.E. Cook and first three kids were apparently missed, or unreadable, in 1870...whereabouts unknown.
No clue on your adopted M. Hornbeck (1868 / 1869). This surname is new to
me, but you have a great website on the subject. Other poss surname connections: Allen, Bowles, Dalby / Dolby, Reeder...any bells ringing?

Are you saying that Mildred Miller born 1822 KY who married Peter Hornbeck about 1847 in KY had a first marriage to husband W. E. Cook? My records show that this Mildred was a daughter of Jacob Miller. She was called Mildred A. on the 1850 census and Mildred G. in the 1860 Grayson Co., KY census.
> A Sam and A. Miller adopted M. Hornback age 11 who appears with them in the 1880 Grayson Co., KY census. Who is M. Hornback? I don't know. Do you?
> Hornbeck/Hornback are interchangeable. Hornbaker is not part of this line... that is an entirely different line, probably German. Hornbeck/Hornback is Dutch.
