BRIGHTWELL
WHEELERSBURG -- Harriet Lavinia BRIGHTWEll, 87, of 8219 Hayport Rd., died at home Saturday after a long illness.
A native of Grays Branch, KY, she was a member of Wheelersburg United Methodist Church for 75 years, organized the junior department of the Sunday School and taught junior high boys for 50 years. She helped organize the Standard Bearers and Queen Esther Society and was a charter member of the Women's Society of Christian Service and Wheelersburg Eastern Star.
She also helped organize the Wheelersburg Pastime Club, Wheelersburg Magazine Club, Wheelersburg Sorosis Club and Wheelersburg Garden Club. A 55-year-member of the Joseph Spencer Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, she organized the Children of the American Revelution in Portsmouth.
She served 10 years as Scioto County Republican chairwoman, attending the Republican National Conventions of 1944 and 1948, was an organizer of the Porter Township Republican Women's Club and served 18 1/2 years on the Scioto County Child Welfare Board.
Preceded in death by her husband, Barnett BRIGHTWELL, in 1966, she is survived by two sons, Robert, at home, and Richard of Tampa, Fla.; a daughter, Mrs. Benjamin (Virginia) COATE, and a sister, Mrs. Oscar (Helen) CRAYCRAFT, both of Columbus; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services are planned at 10:30 a.m. at Stratton Funeral Home with Rev. William TURNER officiating, and burial in Wheelersburg Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.
