Frederick was born in December 1887 in , Scioto, Ohio, USA.1 Frederick's father was Jacob ESSMAN and his mother was Theresa BIHL. His maternal grandparents are Bernhard BIHL and Karolina RUDMANN. He had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Charles, Frank, Elizabeth, Emma and Caroline. He was the second youngest of the seven children.
