SPAXTON, a parish in the hundred of CANNINGTON, county of SOMERSET, 5 miles (W.) from Bridgwater, containing 816 inhabitants. The living is a rectory,[p.140] in the archdeaconry of Taunton, and diocese of Bath and Wells, rated in the king's books at £24. 8. 9., and in the patronage of the Rev. William Gordon. The church is dedicated to St. Margaret. The Rev. Joseph Cook, in 1708, bequeathed lands producing a liberal income for the maintenance of six poor persons in an hospital, for teaching poor children, and other charitable purposes.
