REF: "Falls the Shadow" Sharon Kay Penman: During Simon d
e Montfort's barons war, March 31, 1264 Londoners riot (Lon
don was very pro de Montfort), burn townhouses of the hate
d William de Lusignan, also prominent Royalist Lord Phili
p Basset, also Richard of Cornwall's Westminster manor, & h
is beloved Isleworth manor 7 miles away. Richard overnigh
t goes from trying to mediate a solution to, like Edward, a
rdently desiring a battlefield confrontation.
Richard was not popular with his brother Henry III's subjec
ts as he was intelligent, pragmatic, had business acumen
, & a lack of rancor; these qualities were disdained in fav
or of reckless courage, battlefield prowess, & open-hande
d generosity, which was expected of Lords. Richard's courag
e was never suspect; but he was not an innovative nor brill
iant military commander. At Battle of Lewes on 14 May 1264
, Richard commanded the left flank of the Royalist forces
. After Prince Edward left the battle to pursue with unwho
lesome savagery the rebel Londoner flank of Montfort's forc
es, Montfort, keeping a reserve force (a tactic unheard of
) came in & attacked Henry & obliterated his force; Henry f
leed to the priory. Gilbert de Clare's center column force
s met Richard's & took the day. Richard with his son Edmun
d fled into a windmill. When de Clare's forces captured th
e, they jeered "come out king of the millers". John Giffard
's squire was the one who officially accepted Richard's roy
al surrender, adding to Richard's discomposure (that he ha
d surrendered to a squire rather than a knight). Upon hi
s presentation to Simon de Montfort, Simon made the lad, Jo
hn Befs of Tewkesbury, a knight.
