Henry "Hotspur" DE PERCY 
Henry "Hotspur" was born on May 20th, 1364 in Alnwick, Northumberland. Henry "Hotspur"'s father was Henry DE PERCY and his mother was Margaret NEVILLE. His paternal grandparents were Henry DE PERCY and Mary PLANTAGENET; his maternal grandparents were Baron Ralph NEVILLE and Alice AUDLEY. He was an only child. He died at the age of 39 on July 21st, 1403 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. He was buried in York Minster.General Notes

Knighted in 1377, he aided his father in the suppression o
f the Scots in the north. In 1388 he participated in the fa
mous battle of Otterburn (or Chevy Chase) against the Scots
. He was captured but later ransomed, and returned to his p
ost of warden of Carlisle and the West Marches. He went t
o Calais in 1391 and served (c. 1393-1395) as governor o
f Bordeaux, but by 1398 he was back on the Scottish border
. He and his father, banished by Richard II for objecting t
o certain royal acts, joined the cause of Henry of Lancaste
r. After Henry's accession as Henry IV, Hotspur was calle
d upon to take command of the Welsh border. Sent once agai
n to the defense of the Scottish border, he helped to win (
1402) a notable victory over the Scots at Humbledon Hill, c
apturing the Scottish leader Archibald Douglas, 4th Earl o
f Douglas. A bitter quarrel between Hotspur and Henry IV en
sued when Hotspur refused to turn Douglas over to the Kin
g except in exchange for the ransom of Sir Edmund De Mortim
er, Hotspur's brother-in-law. In 1403 the Percy's planne
d with Thomas Percy, earl of Worcester, Owen Glendower, an
d Sir Edmund De Mortimer to dethrone Henry and crown Edmun
d Mortimer, 5th earl of March, the nephew of Hotspur's wife
. Henry anticipated the move, and in a battle near Shrewsbu
ry (1403) the king was victorious and Hotspur was killed.
The quarrel between Hotspur and Henry IV is one of the cent
ral themes of Shakespeare's play "King Henry IV, Part I."
