Sir George CAREW 
Sir George was born about 1504.1 Sir George's father was William CAREW and his mother was Joan COURTENAY. His paternal grandparents were Edmund CAREW and Catherine HUDDESFIELD; his maternal grandparents were William COURTENAY and Margaret BONVILLE. He was an only child. He died on June 20th, 1545 in Drowned In The Mary Rose.2 General Notes

During a naval engagement with French forces in 1545, the <
a href="http://www.maryrose.org/">Mary Rose</a>, pride of t
he English fleet, sank in the Solent, off Portsmouth, in fu
ll view of King Henry VIII. The reasons for the sinking ar
e not clear, although the French immediately claimed credit
. The truth seems to be that the gunports were too close t
o the waterline. The ports were left open after firing a br
oadside, and when the ship heeled over during a maneuver, t
he water flooded in, capsizing the ship. Sir George was th
e Vice-Admiral of the ship, and went down with it. Betwee
n 500 and 700 of his men died with him. The discovery and e
xcavation of the Mary Rose is one of the greatest annals o
f maritime archaelogy, and was the subject of an article i
n the National Geographic a few years ago.
