His paternal grandparents were James BRINKERHOFF and Catharine VAN VOORHEES; his maternal grandparents were William Swart De Graffe and Willempie NEVIUS. He had four brothers and three sisters, named William, Henry, Hiram, Abram, Catherine, Jane and Phebe Ann. He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
