John was born about 1772 in Montgomery, Montgomery, Virginia. John's father was Oliver Caldwell and his mother was Ann Caldwell. His paternal grandfather was Joseph? Caldwell; his maternal grandfather was John Caldwell. He had two brothers named James and Joseph. He was the youngest of the three children. He had four half-brothers and a half-sister, named George Washington, Andrew, David, Daniel Cook and Nancy. He died on December 5th, 1824 in Hardin County, Kentucky.-
