Robert accompanied Richard, Earl of Cornwall, on crusade in 1240, and in September of that year, as Richard's envoy, he went from Marseilles to the Emperor Frederick II to deliver information about the quarrel between the Earl and the papal legates who were attempting to stop the crusade. In 1245 his lands were seized by the Crown because he had attacked a clerk of the Archbishop of York in the royal hall of Windsor. The date of his death is not known, but he last appears on record 17 Jun 1246.
