General Notes

It is not known exactly when Robert Wynne II, christened at St. Dunstan in 1622 , came to Virginia, but he first appears in the Virginia records along with a C aptain Abraham Wood.  Robert Wynne was a justice in Charles City County Court, October 3rd, 1656.  He was also evidently a Captain of Militia as he is shown a s "Captain Robert Wynne."  He represented Charles City County in the House of B urgesses, March 1657-1658, and March 1659-1660, and was Speaker of House, 1661- 1674.  Colonel Wynne was speaker longer than any other one man in Virginia's hi story.  In 1673, Colonel Wynne was a member of a court martial sitting at James City.

Colonel Wynne died in 1675.  His widow, Mary, is referred to in a sui t in the General Court as his executrix on the 8th of October, 1675.

On acco unt of owning property in England, his will was probated there.  If it was not for this, the place of his old home in England would not be known.  The Charles City County records for that period of time have perished.  He appears to have married a Mrs. Poythress, a widow, as he mentioned his "son-in-law Captain Fra ncis Poythress."  "Son-in-law" in those days meant "step-son".

The Last Wi ll and Testament of Robert Wynne II:

Robert Wynne of Jordan's Parish, Charle s City County in Virginia, Gent., dated July 1st, 1675, probated August 15th, 1 678.
To be buried in Jordan's Church as near as possible to my son, Robert.
M y estate in England to be divided as follows:
     To my eldest son, Thomas Wy nne, one farm in Whitestaple Parish in Kent near Canterbury commonly called "Li mbet Banckes"; if he dies, to my son Joshua, and if he dies, to my daughter Woo dlief.
     To my son, Thomas, two houses in Canterbury in St. Mildred's Paris h in the same form as the said farm.
     To my youngest son, Joshua Wynne, on e house and oatmeal mill lying in Dover lane without St. George's in Canterbury , commonly called the "Lilly Pot"; and two houses adjoining where a Ropemaker a nd one Rawlins were formerly tenants.
     Touching my estate in Virginia, t o my son, Thomas, all of the cattle of his own mark except one cow called Moll which is to be killed for provisions.
     To my son, Joshua, my plantation ca lled "Georges" with all of the tobacco houses.
     To my daughter, Woodlief, one servant of four years to serve the next shipping after my decrease.
     T o my grandchild and Godson, young George Woodlief, one filly foal.
     All of the rest of my estate in Virginia and England to my wife and executrix, Mary W ynne.
     Overseer:  Thomas Grendon, merchant, and my son-in-law, Captain Fra ncis Poythress.
     Teste:  Thomas Brome, John Burge.

The children of Robe rt Wynne II and Mary Poythress:

1.  Robert:  Know nothing of him except that he died before his father.

2.  Thomas:  Born about 1657, married Agnes ?, a nd died May 21, 1718,  in Prince George Co., Virginia.

3.  Joshua:  Born abo ut 1659, married Mary Jones and had a daughter, Mary, born about 1692.  He died about 1714 in Dinwiddie County, Virginia.

4.  Woodlief:  Born in 1668 and d ied in Henrico County, Virginia, in 1718.[New Cunard.ged]
