James was born about 1765 in Culpepper County,Virginia. James' father was William Kilby and his mother was Frances Eddins. His paternal grandparents were John Kilby and Elizabeth; his maternal grandparents were Abraham Eddins and Catherine Towles. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Humphrey, Reuban, Abraham, William, John, Elizabeth, Sarah (Sally), Mary (Polly) and Frances. He died in 1817 in Wilkes County,North Carolina.-
