Matthew was born in 1773 in Surry County,North Carolina. Matthew's father was Samuel Gentry and his mother was Agnes Brooks. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Gentry and Agnes Shelton. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, James, William, Agnes and Daughter. He was the oldest of the six children. He had four half-brothers and four half-sisters, named George, Shelton, Thomas, Arthur, Nancy, Sarah (Sally), Susannah and Elizabeth.-
