James was born on April 14th, 1600 in St. Nicholas, Bristol, Gloucester, England and his baptism took place on April 14th, 1600 in Bristol, Avon, Gloucester, England.  James' father was Mayor William Cary and his mother was Elizabeth Goodale.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Cary Elder and Christian Dennis; his maternal grandparents were Robert Goodhall and Elizabeth. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named Richard, John, Nathaniel, Walter, Robert, Thomas, William, Anne, Susan and Margery. He had a half-brother named Henry.  He died at the age of 81 on November 21st, 1681 in Charlestown, Middlesex, Massachusetts.  He was buried in Charlestown, Middlesex, Massachusetts.
