Josefa's father was Juan Ignacio Carrera Iturgoyen and her mother was Catalina Ortiz de Elguea.  Her paternal grandparents were Joanes De La Carrera Lapaca and Francisca De Iturgoyen y Amasa; her maternal grandparents were Francisco Ortiz de Elguea and Maria Rubio Ahumada. She had a brother and two sisters, named Miguel, Petronila and María.
