He had one or two restaurants. One in Greensboro, circal late 40s or
early 50s. Sort of a beer joint. My dad, Bill Engels, served tables there
briefly.
He was a stone cutter, stone mason, stone contractor thru his life.
Worked on the carvings at Stone Mountain, Georgia. Stone contractor for
outdoor ampitheatre in Gadsden, Alabama. He owned a stone quarry during
or after the depression. Some of his building was funded by WPA. Worked
at Arnold Stone company for a few years prior to 1945, and hoped get Bill
Engels his job there after Bill left the Army.
Jim probably answered a want ad for Jefferson Standard Building in
Greensboro to work on stone work of this building, which is why he moved
to Greensboro.
