Lewis was born on December 1st, 1851 in Lowndes Co., AL.1 Lewis' father was Hartwell V. Smith and his mother was Carolyn Eliza Lewis. His maternal grandparents were Francis Lewis and Mary Dixon Hall. He had two brothers and a sister, named Francis H., Hartwell V., Jr. and Adella. He was the youngest of the four children. He died at the age of 3 on August 20th, 1855 in Lowndes Co., AL.
