Vessie Manuel was born on January 24th, 1914 in Florence, AL.1 Vessie Manuel's father was Murdock Napolean Rushing and his mother was Lena Lenore Stewart. His paternal grandparents were Thomas William Rushing and Melissa King. He had five brothers and three sisters, named William Murdock, Louie Madison, Ralph Rufus, Harley Theodore, Lee Roy, Maudie Elizabeth, Lenora Verle and Living.
