Gustave Frederick Porath 
Gustave Frederick was born on July 15th, 1925 in Troy, Pike Co., AL.1 Gustave Frederick's father was Gustave Frederick Porath and his mother was Ada Lee Spradley. His maternal grandparents were Stephen Anderson Spradley and Avarilla Cathrine Castellaw. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Gaston Gustave, Frederick Spradley, James Joseph, Emma Catherine, Ada Gertrude, Julia Dean, Blanche Louise and Living. He died at the age of 45 on April 11th, 1971 in CA. He was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Montgomery, Montgomery, Co., AL.1 1 General Notes

The following was from a newspaper clipping given to me, Ron Bridges, by
Gertrude P. Parnell via the mail on August 20, 1996.
Porath Brothers in Army and Marines
Mrs. Ada Porath, of 8 Palmetto Street, has two sons serving in the armed
forces.
Sergt. James P. Porath enlisted in the Army at Fort Lewis, Wash., on Dec.
2, 1941, and was stationed at Fort Knox, Ky., until the early part of
1943. He was then sent to Camp Campbell, Ky., for a short period of
training before being assigned to overseas service. He first saw action
in Sicily, and his outfit was among the first to land on the Anzio
beachhead. (1) At present he is stationed somewhere in Italy.
Pfc. Gus F. Porath entered the Marine Corps in September, 1943, and
received his boot training at San Diego, Calif. He was then sent to the
Armored School at Fort Knox, Ky., where he completed a course in tank
mechanics. He was granted a short furlough home before being sent back to
San Diego, his present station.
Anzio
Anzio (àn´zê-o, än´tsyô)
A town of central Italy on the Tyrrhenian Sea south-southeast of Rome. In
World War II Allied troops landed at Anzio on January 22, 1944.
Population, 27,094.
Political Events, 1944
Allied troops storm ashore 25 miles from Rome on Anzio beach January 22
after the start of a new assault on the Gustav Line to the south. The
Germans have just withdrawn their patrols in the Anzio area to reinforce
the Gustav Line, but Gen. J. P. Lucas, commanding the U.S. VI Corps,
misses his chance to advance on Rome. He has his men dig foxholes for 2
days to consolidate their beachhead and the Germans rush in
reinforcements, firing from the Alban Hills to pin down Allied troops.
Allied bombers February 15 destroy the historic Benedictine abbey at
Monte Cassino, 1702 feet above the main road from Naples to Rome. Gen.
Frido von Senger und Etterlin has not used the abbey as an observation
post but employs its ruins as a fortress. Thousands of Allied troops die
at Monte Cassino before Polish forces take it in May.
