Anne Elizabeth was born on November 9th, 1816 in North Carolina.¹ Anne Elizabeth's father was John Grimes and her mother was Catharine Frederick. Her paternal grandparents were James Grimes and Sarah Winders. She had four brothers and five sisters, named James Haywood, John William, Felix Kenan, Robert Franklin, Hepsabeth, Mary Catharine, Martha Jane, Sarah Evalina and Angeline. She was the second oldest of the ten children.
