Martha Ellie was born in December 1875 in Florida.¹ Martha Ellie's father was Thomas William Gavin and her mother was Mary Brown Siegler. Her paternal grandparents were Charles W. Gavin and Mary Ann Garrett. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Charlie, Allen Monroe, James Jessie, Lee Ann, Alice, Alma and Bertha. She was the oldest of the eight children.
