Joel was born about 1770 in Brunswick Co., VA.1 Joel's father was John H. Buckner and his mother was Mary M. Brown. His paternal grandparents were John Buckner and Sarah Buckner; his maternal grandfather was John Brown. He had five brothers and two sisters, named William M., John, Jr., Wiley W., Richmond Monroe, Benjamin, Elizabeth and Mary Polly. He was the third oldest of the eight children.
