William was born about 1214 in King's Nympton, Devonshire, England. William's father was Roger la Zouche , Lord of Ashby, Sir and his mother was Margaret Biset. His paternal grandparents were Alan la Zouche , Lord of North Molton and Alice de Belmeis , Heiress of Ashby & Tong; his maternal grandparents were Henry Biset , Lord of Kidderminster, Sir and Aubrey FitzRichard. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Alan, Eudo (Eon), Lorette and Alice. He was the third oldest of the five children.General Notes
