Duncan "The Gracious" was born about 1001 in Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland.  Duncan "The Gracious"'s father was Mormaer Crininan [Crinan; Grimus] "The Thane" de Mormaer of Atholl and his mother was Princess Bethoc [Beatrix; Beatrice] ferch Malcolm of Atholl or Scotland.  His paternal grandfather was Mormaer Duncan of Athol; his maternal grandparents were King Malcolm Mac Kenneth II of Scotland and Queen Mac Sigurd of Scotland. He had a brother named Maldred [Malcolm].  He was the older of the two children.  He died on August 14th, 1040 in Bothganowan near Elgin, Moray, Scotland.  He was buried in Isle of Iona, Scotland.

‌Duncan "The Gracious" and Sybil (Aelflaed) were married in a religious ceremony in 1030 in Scotland.  They had two sons named Malcolm "Ceann'Moir" and Malcolm III.
