Joan de was born in 1191 in Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England.  Joan de's father was Ralph de Somery , Lord of Dudley & Dinas Powis and her mother was Margaret FitzGilbert Marshal.  Her paternal grandparents were John de Somery , of Little Crawley, Sir and Hawise de Paynel; her maternal grandparents were John "The Marshal" FitzGilbert and Sibyl de Salisbury. She had three brothers named Ralph de, William Perceval de and Roger de.  She was the youngest of the four children.  She died after 1273 in St Augustine's Priory, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England.
