EARLDOM of ORKNEY [NOR] - subject to King of Norway until after 1379
Liot, his next brother but one, suc, him as Jarl of Orkney and m. his widow; but his younger brother Skuli "went up into Scotland and was given the name of Earl (? of Caithness) by the Scottish King" (Kenneth MacMalcolm, 971-995), Skuli disputed LiotÃs inheritance and invaded Orkney, but was defeated and driven back into Caithness. Liot followed him to Caithness and occupied it, while Skuli fled to Scotland. He returned with a great army provided by King Kenneth and Earl Macbeth hut Liot defeated him in the Dales and Skuli was killed. Liot "took Caithness under him and there was great enmity" between him and the Scottish King. Macbeth, Mormaer or Earl of Moray, again attacked Liot, hut was defeated at the (1st) battle of Skidmoor in Caithness.
