Avice was born about 1310 in Wethrington, Lincolnshire, England. Avice's father was John 2nd Baron Marmion , of Tanfield, Sir and her mother was Maud de Furnival. Her paternal grandparents were John 1st Baron Marmion , of Tanfield, Sir and Isabel Peck; her maternal grandparents were Thomas 1st Baron de Furnival , Sir and Joan le Despenser. She had a brother and a sister, named Robert 3rd Baron and Joan. She was the oldest of the three children. She died in Cogges, Whitney, Oxfordshire, England.General Notes

He [John de Grey] married 2ndly, Avice, daughter of John (MARMION), LORD MARMION, and sister and coheir of Robert, LORD MARMION. He died at Rotherfield, 1 September 1359. His widow, as one of his executors, had a protection, 25 September 1359, in consideration of his good services as Steward of the Household. Mention is made, 28 February 1362/3, of the service in West Tanfield Church according to the ordinance of Avice, late the wife of John de Grey of Rotherfi6ld. She was living 20 March 1378/9, having as dower the manors of Cogges and Hardwick and a moiety of the manor and advowson of Fringford (Oxford). At his [Robert Marmion's] death the Barony, according to modern doctrine, fell into abeyance between his two sisters and coheirs: (i) Avice, who married as his second wife John (Grey), 1st Lord Grey of Rotherfield (see that title), and (ii) Joan, who married Sir John Bernack. Avice had two sons: (a) Sir John de Grey, who took the name of Marmion, and is so mentioned in the fine of 1343. He died s.p., in Spain, in 1387; His tomb, in West Tanfield church, is surmounted by a fine wrought iron "hearse"; there are alabaster figures of him and his wife, Elizabeth St. Quentin; he is attired in plate armour, with a gorget of mail, the SS collar, and the Marmion arms, vair a fess, embroidered on a linen jupon. It is uncertain whether, as he died abroad, he was buried at Tanfield or whether the tomb was merely commemorative. The tomb has often been assumed to commemorate his brother Robert de Grey and his wife Lora de St. Quentin; but Lora and her second husband, Sir John de St. Quentin, of Brandsburton, are commemorated in a brass at Brandsburton. (b) Robert de Grey, younger son of Avice Marmion, died before 30 November 1367, s.p.m., (see GREY of Rotherfield). His sole daughter and heir, Elizabeth, wife of Henry, Lord FitzHugh, became heiress to all the property held by this branch of the Marmion family (see FlTZHUGH).
