Gwerystan ap was born in 0954 in Powys, Wales.  Gwerystan ap's father was Gwaithfoed "Fawr" ap Gwynnan , Lord of Powys and his mother was Morfudd verch Ynyr.  His paternal grandfather was Gwynnan ap Gwynnog; his maternal grandfather was Ynyr Ddu , King of Gwent. He had a brother named Elystan ap.  He was the younger of the two children.
