Hugh le was born in 1197 in Ryhall, Stamford, Rutlandshire, England. Hugh le's father was Thomas le Despenser , Lord of Arnesby and his mother was Rohese. His paternal grandparents were Thurston le Despenser and Lucia. He had a brother and two sisters, named Geoffrey le, Rohese le and Muriel le. He was the second youngest of the four children.
