Richard was born in 1060 in Exeter, Devonshire, England.  Richard's father was Baldwin Fitz-Gilbert of Exeter and his mother was Emma Aldreda of Ivry.  His paternal grandparents were Gilbert Crispin I Count of Brionne and Officer of the Household Harlette de Falaise Officer of the Household; his maternal grandparents were Ralph Count of Ivry and Erneberge Albreda De Caux. He had two brothers named Robert and William.  He was the oldest of the three children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named William, Emma and Alice.  He died at the age of 57 on September 8th, 1117.  He was buried in Abbey Of Montebourg.

‌Richard and Adelise were married in a religious ceremony about 1089 in Of, Isle Of Wight, Hampshire, England.  They had two sons named Baldwin De and WILLIAM BARON.
