Roger was born in 1163 in Middleton, Norfolk, England. Roger's father was Earl of Hertford Roger De Clare Earl of Hertford and his mother was Maud (Matilda) De Saint Hillary. His paternal grandparents were Lord of Clare Richard FitzGilbert De Clare Lord of Clare and Alice (Adeliza) De Meschines; his maternal grandparents were James De Saint Hillary and Aveline De Hesding. He had a brother and three sisters, named Richard, Elena, Mabel FitzPatrick and Eveline (Aveline). He was the third oldest of the five children. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Ralph, William V, Cecily and Avice (Agnes). He died at the age of 78 in 1241.-
