Emma de was born about 1029 in Conteville, Eure, Normandy, France.  Emma de's father was Harlevin (Herlouin) Vicomte de Conteville and her mother was Herleve (Arlette) de Falaise.  Her paternal grandfather was Jean de Conteville , Vicomte de Comyn; her maternal grandparents were Fulbert de Falaise and Doda. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Robert de, Odo Bishop of, Muriel de and Miss de.  She was the oldest of the five children. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named William I "The Conqueror" King of and Adelaide of.
