Richard de was born about 1158 in Tunbridge Castle, Kent, England.  Richard de's father was Roger de Clare , Earl of Hertford and his mother was Maud de St. Hilary.  His paternal grandparents were Richard FitzGilbert de Clare , Earl of Hertford and Adeliza Alice le Meschin; his maternal grandparents were James de St. Hilary , of Dalling, Sir and Aveline. He had two sisters named Elana de and Aveline de.  He was the second oldest of the three children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named William d', Avice (Agnes) d' and Maud d'.  He died before November 28th, 1217.

‌Richard de and Amice FitzRobert Countess of were married in a religious ceremony in 1182.  They had a son and two daughters, named Gilbert de, Maud de and Joan de.
