Gilbert de was born on September 21st, 1100 in Tunbridge, Kent, England.  Gilbert de's father was Gilbert FitzRichard de Clare Earl of Hertford/Earl of Hertford and his mother was Adeliza de Clermont.  His paternal grandparents were Richard "de Tonbridge" FitzGilbert Lord de Bienfait/Lord de Bienfait and Rohese Giffard; his maternal grandparents were Hugh Count of Clermont (Creil, and Margaret (Marguerite) de Montdidier Countess of Cler/Countess of Cler. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Richard de, Baldwin FitzGilbert de, Adeliza (Alice) de and Rohesia de.  He died at the age of 49 in 1149 in England.  He was buried in Tintern Abbey, Chapel Hill, Monmouthshire, England.
