General Notes

John was 70 years old when they took Damitta on the east bank of the Nile River in the fift h crusade.  He was on the fifth crusade. He was poor when he left Germany and the pope and ot hers gave him the money he needed to go to the crusade and marry the queen of Jerusalem.  H e was a great general but the pope sent Palagenus to be the religiors arm of the crusade in o rder to see that christian standards were maintained.  They didn't get along as  John wante d to accept the offer of the Sultan, to return Egypt and be given Jerusalem, but Palagius o f Albano refused thinking that more help was comming from Europe. As it turned out they wer e unable to conquer Egypt and in the end had to conceed to a settlement. St Francis of Assis i showed up and when he went to Egypt he was going to convert Islam to christianity.  They we re not impressed with him and gave gifts to him and dismissed him to go on his way. John wen t to Europe in 1222 to get support as he needed more men to govern Jerusalem.  He was also lo oking for a husband for Yulanda, who was now 11.
