James de was born about 1220 in Heleigh Castle, Audley, Staffordshire, England.  James de's father was Henry de Audley , of Heleigh, Sheriff-Stafford and his mother was Bertrade (Bertred) de Mainwaring.  His paternal grandparents were Adam de Audley and Emma FitzOrm; his maternal grandparents were Ralph de Mainwaring , of Warmincham, Justice and Amicia le Meschin. He had two sisters named Emma de and Alice de.  He was the second oldest of the three children.  He died on June 11th, 1276 in Broke his neck in Ireland.

‌James de and Ela were married in a religious ceremony in 1244.  They had five sons and a daughter, named James de, Henry de, William de, Nicholas de, Hugh 1st Baron de and Joan de.
