Mellie was born on February 5th, 1925. Mellie's father was Joseph Albert Jacobs and her mother was Nettie Roxie Shields. Her paternal grandparents were William Jacobs and Meletie Axsom; her maternal grandparents were William C. Shields and Elizabeth A. Deckard. She had five brothers and three sisters, named James, Andrew F., William Joseph, Eugene, Roger Lee, Maudeline, Margaret and Living.-
