Her paternal grandparents were William Jacobs and Meletie Axsom; her maternal grandparents were William C. Shields and Elizabeth A. Deckard. She had five brothers and three sisters, named James, Andrew F., William Joseph, Eugene, Roger Lee, Maudeline, Mellie and Living.-
