Mary's father was Nathaniel Sanford and her mother was Bethiah Kirby. Her paternal grandparents were Ephraim Sanford and Mary Powell; her maternal grandparents were Joseph Kirby and Sarah Markham. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Zachariah, Joseph, Stebbins, Hannah, Susannah and Mercy.-
