Fielder's father was John Dowden and his mother was Mary Gore. His paternal grandparents were John Dowden and Esther Ashford; his maternal grandparents were James Gore and Mary Tomlinson. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Nathaniel, John, Michael Ashford, Thomas P., Anna, Esther, Martha, Mary, Rebecca and Sarah.
