Russell's father was Joseph Birdwell and his mother was Rachel Russell. His paternal grandparents were George Birdwell and Mary; his maternal grandparents were Bryce Russell and Rachel Jane Thompson. He had a brother and five sisters, named George, Elizabeth, Jinny, Mary, Rachel and Sarah.-
