David was born in 1805 in N. C.. David's father was Bartholomew Barrow and his mother was Bethier Brantley. His paternal grandparents were William Barrow and Olivia Ruffin. He had a sister named Mary Anne. He was the older of the two children. He had three half-sisters named Elizabeth Ruffin, Harriet and Sarah.-
