Robert was born in 1877 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Robert's father was Andrew Ausbern and his mother was Jane Burton. His maternal grandparents were Burton and Cecelia. He had a brother and a sister, named Henry and Lucinda. He was the second oldest of the three children.
