Nancy was born in 1850 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Nancy's father was Valentine D. Arnott and her mother was Katherine Smith. Her paternal grandparents were Jacob Arnott and Emeline Grigsby. She had two brothers and five sisters, named Andrew, Monk, Dulcena, Lucinda, Julia A., Minerva and Martha. She was the oldest of the eight children.-
