Tabitha was born about 1838 in Hawkins Co., Tennessee. Tabitha's father was John Armstrong and her mother was Mary Charles. Her maternal grandparents were James Charles and Dorcas Miller. She had four brothers and six sisters, named James, Clinton, John, Wiley, Dorcas Jane, Mary B., Katherine, Millie, Eliza and Louisiana G.. She was the fifth youngest of the eleven children.-
