John was born about 1841 in Hawkins Co., Tennessee. John's father was John Armstrong and his mother was Mary Charles. His maternal grandparents were James Charles and Dorcas Miller. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named James, Clinton, Wiley, Dorcas Jane, Mary B., Katherine, Millie, Tabitha, Eliza and Louisiana G.. He was the third youngest of the eleven children.-
