Edward Lee was born in 1848 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Edward Lee's father was Thomas J. Amis and his mother was Matilda Ann Lee. His paternal grandparents were Haynes Amis and Mary Howell; his maternal grandparents were Edward B. Lee and Sarah Tensley. He had two brothers and three sisters, named William H., James H., Sarah L., Mary Teresa and Barsheba. He was the third youngest of the six children.-
