Elizabeth was born in 1835 in , Bourbon, Kentucky.  Elizabeth's father was Benjamin Allen and her mother was Margaret.  Her paternal grandfather was Allen. She had five brothers and a sister, named Mortimer, William, James, Elijah, John and Frances.  She was the second oldest of the seven children.
