General Notes
William Samuel Rogers was give a land grasnt in lieu of pay for services in the war. Although many soldiers calimed their land they often sold it and never settled it on it. This is how William got the land in Kansas.
As far as we can piece together Amanda and little Will left in late summer of 1870 for Kansas. William's health was not good, we think from army records we have gathered he may have had asthma and or allergies and needed a better climate. Either while traveling to Kansas or while building out buildings on the property, William became ill.
He died on 03 Jan 1871. Amanda's brother came and got her before the spring planting started. She must have had a rough time because James Alva was born in a way station on the way back to Iowa.
